AfDB Lowers Africa’s 2025 Growth Forecast Amid Global Trade Pressures

The African Development Bank (AfDB) projects Africa’s economy will grow by 3.9% in 2025, up from 3.3% in 2024, but down 0.2 percentage points from its earlier forecast. The downgrade stems from new U.S. trade tariffs and global retaliatory measures, which are disrupting exports and lowering commodity prices. The 2026 forecast was also trimmed to 4.0%. Despite these challenges, 21 African economies—including Ethiopia, Niger, Rwanda, and Senegal—are expected to grow by over 5%, with some exceeding 7%.
