South Africa proposes buying US LNG as seeks trade deal
South Africa has proposed a 10-year LNG deal with the U.S., aiming to import 75–100 million cubic metres of liquefied natural gas annually—worth $900 million to $1.2 billion per year. The offer was made during President Ramaphosa’s May 21 visit to Washington, in a bid to improve U.S. ties after diplomatic tensions with President Trump. The proposal also includes duty-free quotas for 40,000 vehicles, steel (385M kg), aluminium (132M kg), and automotive components. South Africa is seeking U.S. cooperation in gas tech and fracking to develop its own resources and pivot away from coal dependency.
