Tanzania has banned agricultural imports from Malawi and South Africa in response to restrictions on its own exports, intensifying a regional trade row.The move comes after Malawi blocked Tanzanian imports such as flour, rice, ginger, bananas, and maize, while South Africa continues to bar Tanzanian bananas.
Tanzania’s Agriculture Minister, Hussein Bashe, emphasized that the decision aims to protect national business interests, criticizing the current lack of reciprocity. Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, Bashe confirmed that talks were continuing but said Tanzania could no longer tolerate unfair trade practices.
The fallout has disrupted trade at key border points like the Kasumulu crossing, where many lorries now sit empty. Malawian exports, often dependent on Tanzanian ports, may now have to reroute through costlier Mozambican ports.
The ban raises broader concerns as it challenges the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to boost intra-African trade.Tanzania insists the ban is not a provocation but a necessary step to ensure equal market access and protect domestic economic interests.
