China says it will remove all tariffs on African exports to boost trade
China has announced plans to negotiate and sign a new economic agreement with 53 African countries it maintains diplomatic relations with, eliminating all tariffs on their exports. This deal goes beyond the current duty-free access granted to least developed countries (LDCs) by extending similar benefits to middle-income African nations such as Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Egypt, and Morocco.

The initiative is expected to support more advanced African economies with strong manufacturing sectors in accessing the Chinese market. At the same time, China has pledged additional support—such as training and marketing assistance—for LDCs to ensure they can remain competitive under the new framework.
Experts say the agreement could help narrow Africa’s trade deficit with China, which reached $62 billion in 2023, by increasing African exports. The move also aligns with China’s earlier commitment, made during the 2023 Beijing summit, to provide 360 billion yuan ($50 billion) in credit lines and investments to African economies over three years.
